CHANGE TO 2007 FORM W-2

As has been my custom for many years now, I spent this past Christmas Eve typing W-2s. I will do the same on New Year’s Eve.

This year as I lined up the first W-2 in my typewriter I noticed a change on the form.

The employee’s Social Security number is now reported on the top of the form in box “a” – where the “Control Number” used to be. The “Control Number” is now in box “d” above the employee’s name - where the Social Security number used to be entered.

The “form ID number” (22222) and the “Void” box has also been moved to the top left corner of the form.

According to the IRS Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3, “We made these changes to protect the employee’s SSN from disclosure when employers furnish Forms W-2 to their employees using a window envelope and to enhance processing efficiency.”

A good idea!
